Alton
D. Kenney is a member of the firm's corporate, criminal
and municipal litigation departments. He has served
with the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office where he
began as an Assistant Prosecutor in 1975. During his
tenure with the Prosecutor's Office, Mr. Kenney was
Director of Trial Division, Chief Trial Attorney (1978-1984);
Director of Sex Crimes, Child Abuse and Homicide Division
(1984-1988); First Assistant Prosecutor (1988-2000);
and Senior Executive Prosecutor, Cold Case Unit (2000-2004).
Mr. Kenney was lead Lead
counsel in State of New Jersey v. Hicks, which
was the first case tried under the new capital punishment
statute in New Jersey. He
also handled
the trial and appellate case of State of New Jersey
v. Marko Bey and appeared for the State in State
of New Jersey v. Richard Begley. These cases substantially
changed the law concerning capital punishment in the
State of New Jersey.
He is also an instructor at Monmouth University, Division
of Criminal Justice of the Office of the Attorney General
of New Jersey and for the New Jersey State Police and
Monmouth County Police Academies. He has lectured for
the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. A member
of the Monmouth Bar Association, Mr. Kenney is also
a past chairman of the Criminal Practice Committee.
