After being involved in an accident, if you received a violent blow to your head, there is a chance you suffered a traumatic brain injury. According to the Mayo Clinic, traumatic brain injuries or TBIs may include bleeding, bruising and torn tissue of the brain.

If an accident caused a TBI, you may not initially notice the symptoms. In fact, many of the symptoms are similar to other conditions.

How is your mental state after a TBI?

Some of your symptoms following a TBI may affect your cognition and behavior. One of the first signs of a TBI is a loss of consciousness. A mild TBI may have a period of unconsciousness that lasts a few seconds, whereas a severe TBI may last for several hours.

Following the accident, you may feel anxious, moody and have difficulty concentrating. Unfortunately, feelings of depression and anxiety may also follow an accident without a TBI. Severe symptoms include slurred speech and combativeness.

How will you feel after a TBI?

Every person experiences a brain injury differently. Your symptoms may not resemble another person’s experience. The most common symptoms include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Tinnitus
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Nausea

You may also lose feeling in your fingers and toes, along with headaches that worsen over time. If you have clear fluid that drains from your ears or nose, this is a sign of a serious TBI. Other severe symptoms included seizures, vomiting, pupil dilation and an inability to wake up.

Always see a medical professional when you receive any violent blow to the head. Some TBIs do not present with immediate symptoms.
