Road rage, often referred to as aggressive driving within the legal system, is a relatively common behavior that has received a great deal of media attention in recent years. Drivers within the state of New Jersey have cultivated an unenviable reputation for being among the most aggressive drivers. Dense population and crowded roadways have contributed to high road rage statistics. Aggressive Driving Encompasses A Wide Variety Of Dangerous Actions

There is no doubt that a vast majority of people are under a great deal of stress both personally and professionally. New Jersey roadways are almost constantly congested with thousands of people all trying to get to specific destinations in a short period of time. Unfortunately, the combination of stress, tight deadlines and pure impatience can create a devastating combination. Road rage often begins with an innocuous situation that quickly unravels and results in tragedy. Some of the most common road rage behaviors include:

  • Rapid acceleration or abrupt braking
  • Taunting other drivers and passengers verbally or with offensive gestures
  • Tailgating
  • Excessive lane changes

Regardless of the instigating situation, it is never appropriate to retaliate with aggressive or violent behavior. If you or a loved one has been injured in a road rage accident, you deserve a staunch advocate on your side to protect your best interests and help you obtain a favorable resolution.

New Jersey Recently Enacted Stricter Penalties For Aggressive Driving

In 2012, governor Chris Christie signed a bill into law known as Jessica’s Law inspired by a young woman paralyzed in an accident caused by an aggressive driver. This law imposes severe penalties for drivers convicted of aggressive driving. For instance, a driver that commits road rage and causes serious injury can be charged with a third degree offense and could face three to five years in prison and a $15,000 fine. A road rage accident that leads to lesser injuries is a fourth degree offense and the offender could be sentenced to 18 months in prison and a $10,000 fine. Other states have enacted similar laws with the hopes of deterring aggressive driving and preventing serious injuries and fatalities.
